| Like Rothko I am interested in the sublime or the transcendental experience, I don't want to necessarily express myself in painting but feel compelled to express my 'not-self'. Rothko claimed 'Romantics were prompted' of 'transcendental experiences' beyond history, beyond society, beyond self. Edmund Burke in his treatise on the sublime listed qualities which evoke the sublime, among them vastness, oneness, infinity, vacuity and darkness. Through my work I am trying to deal with overwhelming anxiety that comes from loss when memories are fighting with feelings, tormenting the 'unconditional'. I have often lapsed into moments of deep thought about the faith in spiritual presence that humans take comfort in. |
