My Methodologies |
My inspiration develops from the commonality of the relationship between the natural, (that of the world around us) and the inspirational is a thread that runs through my own discipline.
Natural forms, colours and textures inspire me. Colours in nature and also in the products of other Artists and Craftspeople. For some years I have been absorbed in the relationships in space, in size and colour and the tensions between the grain of the materials I like to work with.
English hardwoods like oak and beech I find particularly inspiring especially the rays and colours that occur naturally in the wood.
Oak, especially indigenous timber has many natural and hidden qualities. Once I had discovered the potential of the material it encouraged me to Understand why craftspeople for centuries have used their energy and dedication to produce furniture from Oak and why this lovely English wood is respected so much.
As a child I developed a love of the natural environment and the connection I made with the colours, forms and shapes of nature have developed and carried through to my adult life.
I'm always looking at texture and tones of wood, stone and metal wherever I am and how they occur together.
I'm constantly open to absorbing how materials are combined and how one simple form can set-off a whole body of work.
Other furniture and sculpture inspire me, how materials are used, combinations of colour and form and the energy that has gone into the making encourages me to develop my own work and the creativity that I was born with.
Pushing the boundaries of my discipline keeps my creative spirit alive and recently I have introduced metal into my work especially aluminium.
Working with aluminium does not provide the flexibility that I have when using wood exclusively but with careful design I find that interesting contrasts start to develop and my work subsequently takes off on another journey.
